President's Corner
The 15th Annual
Meeting of the Society for Pediatric & Perinatal Epidemiology is
rapidly approaching. The Board has been busily planning the meeting and
is pleased to announce that two new sessions will be offered at the
upcoming annual meeting. In particular, there will be a session devoted
to innovative methods and analytic techniques, and a second session
focusing on graduate training issues. The methods session will focus on
innovative and promising new methodologies (study designs, data
collection and analytic techniques) applicable for practicing
reproductive, perinatal and pediatric epidemiologists. A session on
training issues for the field will provide an opportunity for dialogue
between students, faculty and potential funding agencies. The intent of
the session is to stimulate discussion about the long-term planning
needs for graduate training in reproductive, perinatal and pediatric
epidemiology. A short survey is planned for early 2002 to ascertain much
needed information on faculty involved in teaching and mentoring
students interested in reproductive, perinatal and pediatric
epidemiology. For those of you who look forward to the scientific papers
and posters traditionally hosted at the annual meeting, you won’t be
disappointed. There will be sufficient time allotted for these
presentations. Please submit abstracts describing your research,
innovative methodologies or training issues for consideration. If you
need another reason to attend the upcoming meeting, consider the
opportunity to witness first hand a slide show illustrating the
milestones of the Society over the past 15 years. Check out the aging
process for the longer standing members and the exciting infusion of our
newer members! Join us for |
the festivities! The success of the meeting depends
upon the participation of our members!
This newsletter announces the call for abstracts, the
Student Prize Paper Award, and the Heinz Berendes International Travel
Award. Please encourage eligible students and colleagues to consider
participating in these competitions. Also, nominations are being sought
for president-elect, treasurer and board member. Please feel free to
nominate yourself or a colleague. Remember, service to SPER is a
necessary cause of survival! [Or is it a sufficient cause?] Please do
participate to the extent you can. Further information on all aspects of
the upcoming meeting can be found on SPER’s website <http://www.sper.org>.
On another note, I am pleased to inform you that SPER
is participating with the Epidemiology Leadership Network. This is a
coalition of epidemiologic, public health organizations and related
organizations whose purpose is to foster periodic international congress
meetings (such as the one held last June in Toronto, Canada). The intent
is to foster the continued development of epidemiology and communication
across specialty societies. SPER is pleased to be a part of this timely
and important professional undertaking. The Board welcomes your comments
to this end.
As I enter the midpoint of my tenure as President, I
am pleased to serve the membership and I look forward to hearing your
thoughts pertaining to any aspect of the meeting and the future of SPER
( gbuck156i@nih.gov).
I look forward to seeing you in the dessert! |
