Society for Pediatric and Perinatal Epidemiologic Research

 President's Corner

The 15th Annual Meeting of the Society for Pediatric & Perinatal Epidemiology is rapidly approaching. The Board has been busily planning the meeting and is pleased to announce that two new sessions will be offered at the upcoming annual meeting. In particular, there will be a session devoted to innovative methods and analytic techniques, and a second session focusing on graduate training issues. The methods session will focus on innovative and promising new methodologies (study designs, data collection and analytic techniques) applicable for practicing reproductive, perinatal and pediatric epidemiologists. A session on training issues for the field will provide an opportunity for dialogue between students, faculty and potential funding agencies. The intent of the session is to stimulate discussion about the long-term planning needs for graduate training in reproductive, perinatal and pediatric epidemiology. A short survey is planned for early 2002 to ascertain much needed information on faculty involved in teaching and mentoring students interested in reproductive, perinatal and pediatric epidemiology. For those of you who look forward to the scientific papers and posters traditionally hosted at the annual meeting, you won’t be disappointed. There will be sufficient time allotted for these presentations. Please submit abstracts describing your research, innovative methodologies or training issues for consideration. If you need another reason to attend the upcoming meeting, consider the opportunity to witness first hand a slide show illustrating the milestones of the Society over the past 15 years. Check out the aging process for the longer standing members and the exciting infusion of our newer members! Join us for

the festivities! The success of the meeting depends upon the participation of our members!

This newsletter announces the call for abstracts, the Student Prize Paper Award, and the Heinz Berendes International Travel Award. Please encourage eligible students and colleagues to consider participating in these competitions. Also, nominations are being sought for president-elect, treasurer and board member. Please feel free to nominate yourself or a colleague. Remember, service to SPER is a necessary cause of survival! [Or is it a sufficient cause?] Please do participate to the extent you can. Further information on all aspects of the upcoming meeting can be found on SPER’s website <http://www.sper.org>.

On another note, I am pleased to inform you that SPER is participating with the Epidemiology Leadership Network. This is a coalition of epidemiologic, public health organizations and related organizations whose purpose is to foster periodic international congress meetings (such as the one held last June in Toronto, Canada). The intent is to foster the continued development of epidemiology and communication across specialty societies. SPER is pleased to be a part of this timely and important professional undertaking. The Board welcomes your comments to this end.

As I enter the midpoint of my tenure as President, I am pleased to serve the membership and I look forward to hearing your thoughts pertaining to any aspect of the meeting and the future of SPER (gbuck156i@nih.gov). I look forward to seeing you in the dessert!

Call for Abstracts

SPER requests the submission of abstracts to be considered for oral and poster presentations at the Annual Meeting. As previously mentioned, we are

particularly encouraging abstracts related to epidemiological methods and statistics for one or more sessions. Topics for our members to consider include methods for analysis of correlated data, innovative methods for analyzing dose-response data, time-series analysis, and modeling of social, individual, and population effects.

Since it worked so well last year we will once again be submitting abstracts via the Internet. The guidelines for submission can be found at our web site <www.sper.org>. Please review them carefully and follow the instructions closely. Abstracts must be submitted no later than February 11th.

As in previous years, a $25 is required to process the abstracts. A check, drawn out to "SPER, Inc" along with a copy of the abstract (that clearly indicates the title, names, and address of the corresponding author) must be mailed to the treasurer at:

Cande V. Ananth, PhD, MPH
SPER, Inc
Dept of OB/GYN, UMDNJ-RWJMS
125 Paterson St
New Brunswick, NJ 08901

Authors will be sent notification of the Abstract Review Committee’s decision by April 22, 2002. Notification will be sent by email.

Nominations for Officers

Nominations are being sought for President, Treasurer, and one Member-at-Large. The leadership and direction of the Society depends on our members so please consider serving in one of these roles and/or encourage a fellow SPER member to run. Detained information concerning each office and the nominations form is attached to the newsletter. Nominations are due by February 11th. A slate of candidates will be presented to the membership for elections in March.
