Society for Pediatric
and Perinatal Epidemiologic Research
|
| We are getting increasingly
excited as the time approaches for the annual meeting of SPER, June
13-14 in Seattle. Some of the reasons for our excitement are:
1. The Keynote Speaker: Dr. Robert Goldenberg, of the University of
Alabama, Birmingham, is an excellent speaker and a world authority on
the epidemiology of preterm labor and birth. His talk will present his
thoughts on this important and enigmatic problem.
2. The Student Prize presentation: A number of excellent manuscripts
were received. The winner is: "Plasma concentrations of carotenoids,
retinol and tocopherols in pre-eclamptic and normotensive pregnant
women" presented by Cuilin Zhang, Department of Epidemiology,
University of Washington. The second- and third-place candidates for the
prize will present in poster format.
|
3. The Heinz Berendes
International Travel Award: Five manuscripts were received for
consideration of this award. The winner is Dr. Siyan Zhan, of Beijing
University, who will present her work on homocysteine metabolism, MTHFR
polymorphisms and neural tube defects in China.
4. Abstracts: We received a record number of abstracts–136. Thanks
to the able work of Mark Klebanoff and Mary Hediger, and their group of
reviewers, we were able to perform the challenging job of ranking these
abstracts. We accepted a record number, 105, all of excellent quality.
Of these, the top 13 will be presented as platform talks.
5. Poster Sessions: The evening poster session, June
13, will feature the topics Birth Defects, Pregnancy, and Infancy and
Childhood. The noontime poster session, June 14, will feature
Conception, Pregnancy, Prematurity, and Epidemiologic Methods.
|
6. Seminar Discussion: We will
introduce a new attraction at the evening poster session, June 13. We
will have a seminar-discussion of a selected group of topical posters at
the end of the session. This will be organized by Michael Kramer.
We are considering possible changes in the format of the meeting for
the future. With the increase in the quantity and quality of the
abstracts submitted, it is difficult to find time and space at the
annual meeting for all of the quality work submitted. One response to
this problem would be to increase the length of the meeting to one and
one-half days. This issue will be discussed at the meeting of the
executive board and at the business meeting.
If you haven’t put this meeting on your travel schedule yet, do it
now! You will not be disappointed with the meeting or the locale. Be
there or be square!
See you in Seattle.
